Install Humble Indie Bundle 32 bit games on Fedora 14 (x86_64)
I am a big fan of the Humble Bundle effort. They are supporting good causes, promoting independent game development, and helping to bring independent games to Linux.
That said, a lot of the games they promote have been recently ported to Mac and/or Linux. As a result, not all of them are quite as optimized as they could be for Linux. Anyway, I was looking forward to a few of the games from HIB #3, and as I downloaded the installers, I got a lot of this:
…Searching for a Linux Machine (System76 Leopard Extreme)
This is part 3 of 3 in a series of articles detailing my effort in purchasing a machine with Linux pre-installed. Part 1 details the vendors I established as serious contenders for my purchase, and some other great vendors that are worthwhile if you have different machine requirements than I did. Part 2 covers the laptops I considered, and details the decision process. I also spoiled the purchase surprise in part 2, but this is Part 3 where I want to detail a little bit more about the purchase and my initial reactions after about two weeks of usage.
…Quick and easy Fedora 14 setup (Gnome Classic)
What!? Fedora 15 is out you say? Alas, I am aware, but I can not bring myself to use Gnome3 just yet. I am hopeful that Gnome 3 will push forward and become a viable replacement for Gnome 2, but I do not think that it has achieved this yet, so, Fedora 14 it is.
Just so it’s out there, I spent a lot of time trying to find the Fedora 14 downloads. I don’t know if I missed some blaring download on fedoraproject.org, but I could not find it there. I found the archives, including up to 13, and the current downloads only show 15. Until 14 reaches EOL, you should be able to use this link, and it will take you to a mirror:

Part 3 will cover the final purchase and a few notes about the machine. _
Part one of this series decided that the candidate vendors were Emperor Linux, System76, and ZaReason. As it turns out, I chose an interesting time for this purchase and for these articles. I am going to start with ZaReason’s candidate machine(s), since they are the vendor that got pretty tricky.
…Searching for a Linux machine (Vendors)
This got pretty long, so I am going to make it part 1 of 3. Part 2 will walk through the primary candidate machines and part 3 will cover the final purchase. After I configure and spend some time with the machine, I will post a review.
I decided that it was finally time. Instead of getting a hand me down computer, cleaning up the drive for dual booting and/or wiping, and installing my current distribution of choice, I am getting a new machine. And you know what? Since I am splurging here, I am going to try to get someone else to install Linux for me. At the very least, I am going to make sure that someone else is guaranteeing me that all the hardware works with Linux, so I need not worry about such concerns.
